Our Story

How it all began

peter and kathyTwo friends walked into a coffee shop almost 30 years ago. And in our story – the story of Kathie Hicks and Peter Halley – our province’s foremost multi-award-winning performance theatre was born. And ever since the curtains went up on that first “dinner & show” in 1997, audiences have been having a whale of a time as they’re reeled in to ride the waves through Newfoundland’s stories, songs and unique take on life!

Since then, Spirit of Newfoundland has entertained thousands here in our home province, across the country, and internationally. We like to say there’s a Newfoundlander on stage everywhere you go!

Over the past 27+ years, we’ve produced 90+ original shows garnering 18 industry awards and the distinction of being the only 2-time winner of the Government of NL’s Tourism Award for our contribution to culture! In addition, our many awards include the City of St. John’s Legend Award and the prestigious Adjudicator’s Award for our performance of Nunsense at the Waterford Light Opera Festival in Ireland.

Notably, we have converted five historic spaces in St. John’s into performance theatres, raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the not-for-profit sector, and developed a customer service approach infused with the unique brand of hospitality Newfoundlanders are famous for all over the world.

Spirit of Newfoundland’s mission is clear. If it’s all about Newfoundland and Labrador, then we’re all about showing it off!
